In 1996 Hella participated in the Dry-Tech Project for Droog Design at the Technical University in Delft. Her original intention was to design a cupboard. At the university she was able to work with the latest synthetic fibers so she began to experiment with glass fiber. By realizing that the cupboard design would fail to exploit the material’s heat-resistant qualities, the conclusion was to opt for a different design. It became a lamp knitted from strands of glass fiber that utilizes not only this material’s flexibility but also its transparency and heat-resistance. Looking at the final product, you would never suspect that such a complex technique went into its making.
