Two of the most highly regarded ceramic works from the Museum Princessehof in the Netherlands: a 14th-century copper-red vase from China and a 15th-century cobalt blue Ming vase, were points of departure for the Embroidered Tablecloth. Decorative forms such as dragons and flowers on these vases were used to allow for a new pattern of openwork or embroidery. Ceramic decorations are closely related to textile techniques such as embroidery.
The objects allow the dominant pattern of a dragon and flower off the pieces and onto the tablecloth, liberating the images from the confines of material.
