Using medieval shards donated by the Museum Boymans van Beuningen, Jongerius takes the initiative in a postmodern restoration-project. As starting point she created 7 archetypes in which she glued the shards with epoxy. Some parts of the vases and pots where painted in bright colors; old and new were joined together.
In 1998 two pots from this series were cast in porcelain, which resulted in solid industrial pots. The casting seams are still visible. The pots appear to consist of more than one piece.
As with the medieval pots, the pots are decorated with porcelain labels of Hella’s thumbprint. This was customary in the Middle Ages when illiterate potters would mark their pots with their fingerprints underneath.
The vase has a red band of car spray paint. This is done to mock the tradition of glazing within the ceramics world.
